Jeremy Lin ( August 23, 1988 Los Angeles, CA)


A Cinderella story in the NBA.

Just two weeks ago, twenty-three year old Jeremy Lin from California (undergraduate at Harvard University) was warming the bench for the New York Knicks.

 He had recently been cut from the Golden State Warriors, and was possibly on his way to being cut from the Knicks. And then..

Fate stepped in, and in one night, Jeremy went from benchwarmer to starting point guard.

Now all the people who said Jeremy-who? are now kicking themselves for not recognizing his talent. Jeremy even realizes that he is not 'flashy' or freakishly athletic'. He never changed his game or personal style to become more noticeable. And most importantly, in an era of very inflated NBA salaries-he has kept the game first.


I could talk about his work ethic, which is a new way of looking at the Asian success story, his ethnicity- Asian American players are a rarity in the NBA, his good looks-yes Asian male sexuality will be everywhere- there will be more Asian men in print and commercials for sure:) but most of all I admire his committment and belief in something larger than himself. I admire that he didn't let sitting on the bench suck all the life out of him, or dictate the future possibilities of his NBA career. I love that when fate called, he was ready.
