Don Cornelius
September 27, 1936 – February 1, 2012

"and you can bet your last money, it's all gonna be a stone gas, honey! I'm Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!"

This is Don Cornelius, the creator of the American dance show, Soul Train. He died today at the age of 75. Every week, usually on a Saturday, around midday, Soul Train would transport our household to a live concert of the most popular Black artists at that moment! I started watching Soul Train as a kid, and it was a natural part of my world.
Basically it was just a popular dance show that showcased American music and fashion. But it was also making a huge statement that Black people in America, like it or not, were not going to be ignored because of the difference in our skin color, physical features, or hair texture. We were going to celebrate our "difference"- and not hide or apologize for it.
That message of self-acceptance is so simple yet so powerful-
